The Senior Tax Manager plays a critical role in the firm’s tax practice serving as a technical expert, strategic advisor, and team mentor. This position focuses on high-level tax review, advanced technical problem-solving, and shaping the firm’s approach to complex tax matters. Key Responsibilities

Technical Review & Tax Strategy
  • Lead the technical review of complex and high-value tax returns, including Forms 1040,1065, 1120, 1120-S, 1041, and 990, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and strategic alignment.
  • Apply in-depth knowledge of tax law to identify issues, evaluate alternative treatments, and provide innovative, research-backed recommendations.
  • Serve as a go-to technical resource for staff and partners, interpreting new tax legislation, court cases, and IRS rulings.
  • Oversee the consistent application of best practices, templates, and procedures to ensure firmwide accuracy and efficiency.
  • Develop and implement forward-looking tax strategies for individuals and business entities, helping clients minimize liabilities and plan proactively.
  • Take ownership of complex or specialized projects, such as multi-entity structuring, succession planning, or transaction analysis.
Client Advisory & Relationship Management
  • Partner with clients as a trusted technical advisor, delivering strategic insights and clear explanations on complex matters.
  • Collaborate with partners to design and present integrated tax strategies that align with clients’ broader business and personal goals.
  • Participate in key client meetings to communicate tax implications, planning opportunities, and regulatory changes.
  • Maintain a proactive approach to client service by anticipating needs, identifying risks, and suggesting process or policy improvements.
Team Development & Technical Coaching
  • Provide hands-on mentoring and technical coaching to tax staff and seniors, building their technical acumen and professional confidence.
  • Review and provide structured feedback on staff workpapers, offering clear, educational guidance rather than transactional corrections.
  • Support training initiatives and help design internal technical development programs for the tax team.
  • Model a calm, solutions-oriented leadership style that promotes learning, accountability, and teamwork.

What You Bring

  • 7+ years of progressive public accounting experience in tax preparation and review.
  • Proven strength in technical tax analysis and interpreting complex regulations.
  • CPA license required or in active pursuit.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in multi-entity and multi-state taxation, and experience with high-net-worth individuals, partnerships, and S-corporations.
  • Strong research, writing, and documentation skills for technical memos and client correspondence.
  • Proficiency in Thomson Reuters UltraTax, Engagement Manager, GoFileRoom, and QuickBooks.

Small Business Accounting (SBA) Department

The Accounting Manager oversees day-to-day operations within the SBA department, ensuring accurate, efficient, and timely client work. This role manages staff, balances multiple client priorities, and serves as a technical accounting resource for the team. The Accounting Manager is expected to be highly detail-oriented, strong in workflow and project management, and advanced in QuickBooks Online (QBO), including review, troubleshooting, and cleanup. Complex or strategic matters are escalated to the Director of Small Business Accounting as needed.

Reports to: Director of Small Business Accounting

Responsibilities:

    • Oversee day-to-day SBA department operations, ensuring accurate, complete, and timely financial deliverables across all assigned clients.
    • Review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and related deliverables prior to client release to ensure accuracy, consistency, and proper support.
    • Lead, support, and hold accounting staff accountable for productivity, quality of work, and deadline adherence; provide coaching, feedback, and guidance as needed.
    • Coordinate onboarding and ongoing training for accounting staff and identify skill or knowledge gaps.
    • Serve as an accounting advisor for assigned small business clients providing routine financial insights, cash flow guidance, and general advisory support; analyze financials and respond to higher-level client accounting questions.
    • Troubleshoot complex accounting issues including reconciliations, cleanup work, and classification issues.
    • Support workload planning, manage competing priorities, and enforce deadlines across multiple concurrent client engagements and internal initiatives.
    • Implement department initiatives established by firm leadership and collaborate with the Director on process refinement, standardization, and efficiency improvements.
    • Identify opportunities for additional services and coordinate with the Director and other departments for cross-selling and referrals.
    • Encourage effective and consistent use of cloud accounting tools and best practices
    • Coordinate with the Tax Department to ensure year-end reporting is complete and books are tax-ready.
    • Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state, and local requirements.
    • Maintain strong documentation standards to support audit trails, tax preparation, and internal quality control.
    • Perform other related duties as necessary to support departmental and firm-wide objectives.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is preferred.
  • 7–10+ years of accounting experience; prior experience in public accounting and/or Client Accounting Services (CAS) strongly preferred.
  • Proven experience managing and developing accounting teams; ability to coach, give feedback, and hold team members accountable to deadlines.
  • Advanced proficiency in QuickBooks Online required; QBO ProAdvisor certification preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting principles, practices, and GAAP.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy; strong documentation discipline.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and shifting deadlines.
  • Excellent client-facing communication skills and the ability to explain accounting issues clearly and professionally.
